Design a Dinosaur and More This October Half Term at Dynamic Earth

11th October 2018

After the roaring success of ‘Designosaur’ this summer, five star visitor attraction, Dynamic Earth, is bringing dinosaurs back into the digital age for October half term.

From Saturday 13th October, visitors to the attraction will have the opportunity to design their very own dino, choosing everything from colour to camouflage, before having it brought to life before their eyes.

Brand new to Dynamic Earth this year, the unique activity sees youngsters use an iPad to build their personalised dinosaur, then enables them to interact and even snap a selfie with their monstrous creation using clever mixed reality technology.

There is also a packed programme of family-friendly events running throughout the holidays including a final chance for budding trainee environmental scientists to join in Operation Earth (14-17th and 20-21st October). A tie up with the Natural Environment Research Council, this national programme will help the whole family find out more about how scientists are working to understand our changing planet.

Do you have lots of puff? Take a deep breath and find out! On 18th and 19th October, the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology are teaming up with the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research, to talk about pollution in the air and what it means for our health. Visitors will be able to get hands on and have a go at measuring air quality, see how we forecast air quality or catching air pollutants and explore how much cleaner our air is now compared to the past.

Throughout the holidays, a stunning photography exhibition by Alex Ingle will be on display, documenting the work of UK scientists in Greenland, and on 13th October, there will be the opportunity to meet glaciologists from the University of Liverpool and the University of Edinburgh in person and discover what it is really like to live and work in Greenland.

Special guests from the Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be on site from October 15th to 19th with colourful displays and hands-on gem activities as well an opportunity to find out about minerals and our health.

From 26th-28th October, the venue will host The Festival of Physics, which features exciting science shows and workshops to celebrate the inventions and discoveries that shape our world and future.

And finally, on October 29th, get ready to delve into the dark! In a fantastic free exhibition from the Science and Technology Facilities Council, visitors can discover how scientists are hunting for Dark Matter and are trying to uncover the secrets of our hidden universe. Youngsters can explore a model of an underground mine where the hunt is underway and see a mine safety suit worn by researchers to keep them safe 1km underground.

Commenting on this year’s packed half term programme, Eilidh Massie, Marketing Director at Dynamic Earth, said: “We have a whole host of activities in our October programme this year, all of which offer the perfect mix of fun and engaging content to encourage the whole family to get involved.”

As well as Designosaur and the programme of events, regular Dynamic Earth features include Scotland’s only permanent 4D cinema, the ever-popular real iceberg, a bone-shaking earthquake and the Deep Time Machine which takes visitors billions of years back in time.

For the full month of October, Dynamic Earth will be running a special ticket offer which allows visitors to upgrade their day ticket to an Annual Explorer Pass for free. For more information, visit: https://www.dynamicearth.co.uk/visit/buy-tickets-online

Activities will run from Saturday 13th to Monday 29th October and will be available from 10.00am – 16.00pm daily.
