Political Speed Dating
2 August 2006
Frank McAveety MSP on a political speed date
Further to the launch of the Electoral Commission's , Pagoda organised the Scottish launch of one of the flagship activities from the toolkit - Political Speed Dating. The aim is to encourage more young people to participate in politics and help challenge some of the stereotypical views they may have of politicians. It also offers politicians the chance to listen to young people and better understand their issues and concerns.
Held at Edinburgh's 6VT with 10 MSPs and councillors from around Scotland, young people had the chance to 'date' for three minutes with each politician (in true speed dating style!) and ask various questions, before noting down a score and moving to another. Once everyone had 'dated', the scores were totalled-up and the winner presented with a 'political hoodie'. In this case, first prize went to Councillor Peter McNamara from North Ayrshire Council.
The event generated large amounts of media coverage including BBC TV and ITV Border in addition to national and local radio and press coverage.
Political Speed Dating will be rolled out throughout Scotland and Pagoda are producing an toolkit which will soon be available online.
