Call for Cape Wrath Photo Competition Entries - Images Set to Decorate Playing Cards

9 April 2010

Built heritage project based in North West Sunderland, Defending the Past, is running a photographic competition over the next two months giving people the opportunity to capture the breathtaking surroundings of Cape Wrath and see the images feature on playing cards for soldiers.

The competition organised by Defending the Past, part of RCAHMS, the organisation which holds the national collection of material and information on Scotland’s built heritage, will run until 31 May and winners will be notified in mid June.

Thirteen images will be selected from those submitted to each of the four categories: Cape Wrath archaeology and architecture; flora and fauna; sea and coast, and mountain and moor.

Selected images will feature as part of playing cards given to soldiers who train at Cape Wrath Training Centre, showcased at a community exhibition and online here.  Additionally, a winner of the best image from each category will receive a copy of RCAHMS recent publication ‘Above Scotland’ showing some of the finest aerial photography from RCHAMS’s own stunning collection.

Funded by Defence Estates and now the Heritage Lottery Fund, ‘Defending the Past’ aims to bring to life and showcase the built heritage of the military training area at Cape Wrath.

RCAHMS staff are working with local primary and secondary pupils, encouraging them to access, enjoy, and share understanding of the built heritage with troops who come to the area to train. Defence Estates staff will bring their knowledge of outdoor pursuits, teaching, archaeology and health and safety to the project.

The photo competition is open to everyone including those outwith the North West Sunderland area and entrants can submit as many photos as they like here . Photos should be submitted as jpegs and should be 300dpi or 1MB-8MB resolution.

Notes to Editors:
1) For over one hundred years, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) has been collecting, recording and interpreting information on the architectural, industrial, archaeological and maritime heritage of the nation, creating a unique archive that offers a remarkable insight into the special nature of Scotland's Places.  Over 15 million items, including photographs, maps, drawings and documents are made widely available to the public via the web, through exhibitions and publications, and at the RCAHMS search room in Edinburgh.
2) Defending the Past is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Defence Estate.
3) Defence Training Estate is the organisation responsible for the management of the majority of MOD's training areas and ranges in the UK and overseas. It’s mission is to provide a safe and sustainable training estate to meet Defence Objectives for the three services. Cape Wrath Training Centre is an important range providing facilities for naval and army gunnery training and air force air-to-ground weaponry practices.
4) Using money raised through the National Lottery, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) sustains and transforms a wide range of heritage for present and future generations to take part in, learn from and enjoy. From museums, parks and historic places to archaeology, natural environment and cultural traditions, we invest in every part of our diverse heritage. To date it has invested over £500 million in Scotland’s heritage.
