Shortlist announced for prestigious Aquaculture Awards

The Crown Estate has today announced the shortlist (below) for its 2015 Scottish Marine Aquaculture Awards.

The awards celebrate the achievements and success of an industry that is vitally important to Scotland and its coastal communities. Taking place on 11 June 2015, the awards ceremony and dinner will be presented by comedian Jo Caulfield and feature entertainment from Edinburgh-based Celtic rock band, Shooglenifty.

Held every two years, to match the industry’s production cycles and development of new products and initiatives, the awards come at a time of continued growth in a sector where Scotland is already a world leader.

Some of the biggest names in the aquaculture industry have made the final shortlist. Nominees were chosen on the basis of their high standards of innovation, responsibility in their approach to business and their environmental sustainability.

Eight award categories recognising the breadth of innovation and good practice from across the sector will be contested on the night. These include awards for innovation, business development and farm manager of the year.

Entries were encouraged from individuals, companies and other organisations involved in the Scottish marine aquaculture industry who:

  • Employ the highest standards of aquaculture husbandry;
  • Supply Scottish marine aquaculture products to local, national and international markets;
  • Farm with a high level of environment awareness; and
  • Deliver a high-quality product.

Alex Adrian, aquaculture operations manager, The Crown Estate said, “This shortlist reflects the spirit of enterprise and the commitment to excellence that characterises the Scottish aquaculture sector. I would like to thank all those who entered and congratulate those who have made the shortlist.

The quality of the entries across all the categories this year was exceptional and the judges took time to deliberate, before selecting the final nominees.

The Scottish Aquaculture Marine Awards have established themselves as a key date in the industry’s calendar and The Crown Estate is delighted to provide a platform highlighting all the excellent work taking place. We are all looking forward to a fantastic night on June 11.”

The Crown Estate provides leases for fish farms and works to develop the aquaculture industry. It has invested £1 million in Scottish aquaculture R&D over the last five years. Working on a commercial basis, it takes a balanced approach to ensuring its assets are managed effectively while maintaining strong links with local communities and investing in stewardship and educational activities to maintain the value of the estate.

The awards are sponsored by Skretting, Marine Scotland, Fusion Marine, Acoura Marine, EWOS, Highland and Islands Enterprise, Fish Vet Group and BioMar in addition to The Crown Estate.

The awards ceremony and dinner will take place on 11 June at Prestonfield House. Full details of the event as well as a copy of the full shortlist will be available on The Scottish Marine Aquaculture Awards website where tickets for the event can also be purchased.
