Allergen free bread hits Waitrose shelves in Scotland

Waitrose is the first supermarket in Scotland to stock gluten and allergen free bread from pioneer bakery Just: Gluten Free.

Each of Waitrose’s six branches is now stocking allergen free brioche-style burger buns, seeded rolls, sandwich bread and morning rolls. The news will be welcomed by customers with coeliac disease or other food allergies such as nuts, seeds, eggs, dairy and celery.

The Just: Gluten Free bakery, which is based at Motherwell Foodpark, is a pioneer for allergen-free food in Scotland. Its owner, Ronnie Stebbings, set up the business 18 months ago after growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of choice and quality in gluten-free products. Ronnie has over 20 years of experience in the bakery industry and over 12 years of gluten-free product experience.

Ronnie said: “I wanted to develop better quality gluten free foods because of my own intolerance to wheat. When I found out that one in five people are allergic to one of the 14 main food allergens, I decided to create bread that they could all enjoy. It was a challenge to say the least; but I firmly believe everyone has the right to a decent sandwich.

“Our bread is high-quality, preservative free and low in fat, salt and sugar. We use different blends of all natural tapioca, rice and maize to make our bread and we keep the site allergen free too.

“We contacted Waitrose because it has the same commitment to excellent, tasty food that we do and is well-known for its ‘Love Life’ Free From range.”

Chloe Graves, Free-From Buyer at Waitrose, said: “Just: Gluten Free is a truly unique product. They don’t handle gluten, dairy, nuts or any of the main allergens, so their breads will appeal to customers with multiple allergies.

“This award-winning bakery is a very welcome addition to our family of Scottish suppliers and I’m sure our customers will be very excited by the arrival of these new products in our branches.”

“The popularity of our free-from range shows no sign of abating and we’re continuing to see customers choose gluten-free options as alternatives to their everyday favourite foods. For many, gluten-free has become a lifestyle trend. In order to keep up with demand we’ve already vastly expanded our ‘free-from’ range and are set to widen it further later on this year.”

Just: Gluten Free is now delivering a range of products to Waitrose’s six Scottish branches and will also deliver to Waitrose Milngavie when it opens on 11 June.

The new products are:
• Brioche Style Burger bun 2x2 each
• Good Seeded rolls 4x4 each
• Good Seeded Sandwich bread 6x600g
• Good White rolls 4x4 each
• Good White Sandwich bread 6x600g
